Chapter 3: Dragon and Wisp

Elsewhere, around the barren Viking island of Berk, a young dragon trainer was rocketing through the air on the back of his ten foot, jet black, fire breathing reptile. The boy was Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, heir to the throne of Berk, and the first ever of the dragon riders. His dragon was Toothless; the last known existing Night Fury in the world. The two of them were out gliding over the sea, looking for fish to bring home. They'd already been flying for hours, and had gotten pretty far from Berk by now. The basket they brought was nearly full to the brim with fish.

“Alright, bud, you think we got enough?”, Hiccup asked the dragon, pointing to the full basket rigged to the side of his harness. Toothless nodded. Suddenly, his eyes narrowed, going into instinct mode. “Oh, Toothless, please not now.”, Hiccup groaned.
Toothless pulled down, hurdling towards another island. “Whoa, Toothless what are you doing?”, Hiccup asked him, trying to pull up. But too late, they rammed into the ground, and Hiccup was knocked unconscious. When he came to, Toothless was over him, looking a little worried about his trainer.  When he groaned, and opened his eyes, the dragon smiled, and licked his face happily.

“Yeah, I'm OK. I'm glad you're OK, too, buddy.”, Hiccup said, pushing Toothless away, wiping the dragon slobber off his face. He got up, and looked around to see where they were. They seemed to be in the middle of a forest somewhere. Exactly where though, they had no idea.

“Well, I have no clue where we are.”, Hiccup said to Toothless, but the dragon was off chasing something. The something seemed to be a little blue dot.
He watched in amusement as Toothless drove himself crazy trying to catch it. Every time he caught it, it popped up somewhere else. Then suddenly, Toothless's gaze fixed right at his head.  He looked up, and recognized what the thing was. “No, Toothless, wait.”, the dragon was about to pounce on him, but he dodged. Now Toothless was mad. He growled, looking round for that mysterious blue dot, but Hiccup stopped him.
“Whoa, buddy, take it easy.”, he said, stroking the dragon's head. “Those things are wisps. I read about them when I was a kid.”, he explained. “They're supposed to lead you to something, but I can't remember what.”
Another wisp popped up, and motioned them to follow it.

“Shall we?”, he asked Toothless, who shook his head, and backed up, nervously. “Oh, come on, Toothless, what the worst that can happen?'', he said, as a whole trail of wisps appeared behind the first one. Hiccup started walking down the trail, but Toothless stayed behind, skeptical. “You coming, Toothless?”, Hiccup asked him, and the dragon sighed, and reluctantly followed him. The trail took them a long way, it seemed to be all the way across the forest. Hours later, they were still walking along the trail, and it just seemed to get longer.

“Man, this is taking a while.”, Hiccup said, yawning. As they came close to the edge of the forest, the last wisp disappeared.  As they came out of the trees, Hiccup saw what looked like the back of a huge castle.
“Let's go quietly around.”, Hiccup whispered, and they sneaked around towards the front of the castle.

The castle was big, and it was made of stone. It had high walls, and about six look out towers. Servants were working outside, apparently getting ready for a big event. Some were setting up tents, others were getting water from the well, and some were setting up... archery targets?

“Wherever we are, it's probably better if we don't intrude on whatever it is that's going on around here today.”, Hiccup whispered.

“Oh I don't think ye'd be intruding much, the whole kingdom's invited to this competition.”, said a voice beside him.
He jumped, and looked to see who'd said it. He looked, and saw a young girl, around his age, a little taller than him, around the same weight, with wild, curly red hair, wearing a green dress with an archer's bow on her shoulders.
“Oh, hi, um, I'm Hiccup, and this...”, he gestured to the startled dragon, “is my dragon, Toothless.”

“Nice to meet you, Hiccup. I'm Merida.”, the girl said, with a small bow. “Do you keep dragons as pets where you come from?”
“Well, yeah. But Toothless to me, is more than a pet, he's my best friend, aren't you, bud?” , he said, scratching Toothless under his chin.

“Oh, you and your lizard want to come inside, and look around?”, Merida asked, pointing towards the castle.

“You sure we can go in there?”, Hiccup asked, skeptically.

“Sure we can,” Merida said, “I am the princess after all.”

“Oh, the princess, well, uh, sorry for my rudeness, your majesty.”, Hiccup said, bowing.
Toothless did the same, only more suavely.
“Come on, stop that now.”, Merida said, giggling.

Hiccup straightened up, blushing. And cleared his throat awkwardly. “You know, it just so happens that I'm the heir to my viking tribe.”
“Wait, yer a viking?”, Merida gasped. “Ye don't really look it.”
“Yeah, I didn't really... get any of the viking genetics, but, I did get the brain of an inventor. Observe.”, he said, pointing to the rigged saddle on Toothless's back.

“Ye know, vikings have sort of been our enemies for quite some time now.”, Merida said, looking between Hiccup and her castle, “But, I don't think they'd pass ye as a viking.” she said, sounding really sure of herself. “Come on, I'll give ye a tour of the place.”, she said, running toward the castle. She stopped after 10 feet, and turned around, and came back. “Um...Do ye think I could get a ride on yer dragon afterward?”

Hiccup looked at Toothless, who nodded.

“Sure, why not?”

Merida made an excited squeal. Then whistled for her horse; Angus, who galloped up obediently. “This is Angus, he's pretty fast.”

“Well, I bet he can't outrun a Night Fury.” Hiccup said, smugly, patting Toothless on the shoulder proudly.

“We'll see about that, now won't we?” Merida joked, mounting her horse, and riding off into the trees.
“Come on, there's so much I want to show you.”, she called back

“Be right there.”, Hiccup said, mounting onto the Night Fury “Toothless, to the castle.”, and they rode off after the horse and Princess.
